Heritage Theatre Auditorium Refurbishment
A producing theatre with an auditorium last refurbished in the 1990s, seating that failed on comfort and appearance, and a nine-week dark period in which all works had to be completed.
- Challenge
- Original cast-iron frames were sound, but fabric was faded and torn across the stalls and dress circle, foam had collapsed, and a large number of armrests and end panels were damaged. Listing conditions prohibited any change to the visible frame or fixings.
- Solution
- Every frame was retained and stripped in situ by a specialist fitting team. Fabric was matched to an archive sample and tested for flame performance, foam was replaced to original profiles, and armrests and aisle panels were repaired or remade off site. Works were phased stalls first, then circle, within the dark period.
- Outcome
- The auditorium reopened on schedule with a consistent, like-new house, no change to capacity or listed fabric, and a seating asset expected to serve a further 12–15 years before replacement is revisited.
